Entrepreneurship advice from AirBnB Founder - “Parent, Permission & Rebuild”
Entrepreneurship is anything but easy but the world can surely benefit from more entrepreneurs.
There’s many things Brian Chesky mentioned in this video, and while pretty much all of them are takeaways, I particularly enjoyed these 3 words as they resonated straight up with me given our journey thus far at Snowpal.
“Parent, Permission & Rebuild”
1. “Parent”
I’ve always thought of Snowpal as my 2nd child. It was born a few years ago, it started crawling and then, walking. It has to walk faster, then run, then fly domestic, then international, and then, go to outer space!
But, the only thing we are focused on right now is that next step: Walking a bit faster. The rest — would be for another day.
2. “Permission”
It’s a given that every single day is a learning process, and if you keep your eyes and ears open, and are open minded, you are going to learn something from someone, somehow, all the time, and once you do that, you need the permission to act upon it.
How you get that permission surely depends on the structure of your company but needing it — you sure do.
3. “Rebuild”
What better example than Slack that started out as a gaming company. As much as building something is important and not easy, rebuilding is the hardest as it demands that you make the necessary adjustments once you’ve come to believe they shall make a meaningful difference.
Is Entrepreneurship easy?
Entrepreneurship is anything but easy but the world can surely benefit from more entrepreneurs for a plethora of reasons — one of it being the simple fact that the more there are, the more avenues some of us have to learn from!
I would be lying if I said there aren’t days I think to myself of the pleasures of doing a day job that actually ends at some point in the day. I’ve done those a smaller percentage of my career, and even when I did those, I always knew it wasn’t for me, certainly not for eternity.
As hard as running a company as, and as many sacrifices as it demands, it’s absolutely unparalleled (in my opinion). I can say with absolute confidence that I could’ve never, ever learned anywhere even remotely close to the breadth of what I think I know now (though it’s still very, very little in the grand scheme of things) if not for me becoming an entrepreneur. That — I’ve few doubts about.
